After
the Inter shareholders' meeting at Milan's Teatro delle Erbe, president
Giacinto Facchetti gave some explanations to the media.
Regarding the head coach situation, Facchetti pointed out: "I explained to
the shareholders that three days ago, Massimo Moratti told me that if I
wanted to continue with Zaccheroni then I could. I spoke with Zaccheroni,
he asked me for time to reflect and then he said he didn't feel he could
continue with us. He didn't feel he had everyone's faith. I've always said
I was looking for continuity with the coach, but like I've already
explained, I was free to proceed.
"It's useless to try and understand what the problems with Zaccheroni
were, but he has preferred to resign and so we have changed direction.
With Mancini, who is one of the best young coaches around, negotiations
are under way but no agreement has yet been concluded. I say this to
underline the fact that he hasn't already been here for a while, which is
what some people have been saying."
Facchetti also answered the inevitable questions about the transfer
market. "Davids? He's a very good and very strong player, but like I said
to the Inter shareholders, our operations must coincide with the necessary
economic improvement of the club, especially this year. Football is going
through a strange moment and we can't deny this, though it's our plan to
create a competitive side. At the meeting we talked about Inter's
importance, and that it is and wants to remain one of the best clubs in
the world.
"Vieri? In this period we have received two offers, from Juventus and Real
Madrid. We'll now talk with him and the new coach then decide what's best.
We will evaluate every offer we receive and together with the coach we'll
decide what to do."
Christian
Vieri refused the bench for today's match against Bologna, deciding to
stay at home instead of going to the stadium with the other players.
It is reported that coach Alberto Zaccheroni did not want to risk him yet
as Vieri is still recovering from his head injury picked up a week ago at
Perugia.
The Inter attacker did not accept Zaccheroni's decision and decided to
stay back home rather than sit on the bench.
"I have already told him many times before that if I am to come on for
15-20 minutes then I may as well stay and train," said Vieri.
"It's a wasted day, so at least I can maintain my full fitness for when I
am called. If the Coach doesn't want to play me, then I may as well do
something useful.
He added: "I have no rapport with Alberto Zaccheroni. I don't speak to the
Coach at all, but that doesn't mean I can't train properly and be good for
the team.
"I have already played those ten minutes after training for an hour, but
as you've seen in previous games I don't play well in those conditions."
This latest bust-up between the pair must put huge question marks over
Vieri's future at the club, or indeed that of Zaccheroni.
Inter
confirmed the signing of midfielder Dejan Stankovic from Serie A rivals
Lazio for a fee believed to be in the region of four million euros (4.95
million dollars).
As part of the deal, Lazio will also receive Inter's 20-year-old
striker Goran Pandev - currently on loan at Ancona - in the summer.
After putting pen to paper on a contract which takes him up until June
2008, Stankovic said Saturday that he was relieved to finally make the
switch to Inter, who have been chasing him for months.
"I thank Inter for their interest and belief in me," said the 25-year-old
Serbia and Montenegro international, whose Lazio contract was due to
end in the summer when he would have been able to leave for nothing.
"I have great respect for Lazio who gave me the chance to play at
the highest level, but now I am starting a new adventure with a great
club."
Stankovic will wear the number 11 shirt and could feature in Sunday's home
match against Siena.
"If he is in good shape he could play straight away," Inter coach Alberto
Zaccheroni said.
Lazio boss Roberto Mancini, who earlier in the week said he was hopeful of
holding on to Stankovic, admitted the Rome club's cash problems forced the
board to accept Inter's offer.
"Weve lost a great player," Mancini said. "I was convinced he would stay
until the summer, but the decision was taken by the club.
"We must now just look to the future. Lazio remain a strong side and
I'm convinced we can still finish in the top four and win the Italian
Cup."
Stankovic spent six seasons with Lazio after joining them from Red Star
Belgrade and played a key role in the club's 2000 Italian league title
success.
Inter and Lazio are tied for fourth place in Serie A on 32 points
from 18 matches played.
Inter restore pride to set up Cup semi against Juventus
January 21, 2004
Inter, whose challenge for the Serie A title has faltered in recent weeks
following back-to-back defeats, restored some pride by easing into the
last four of the Italian Cup.
Inter, whose embarrassing home defeat against lowly Empoli on Sunday led
to Massimo Moratti stepping down as club president, defeated Udinese 3-1
in an often fractious quarter-final second leg to reach the semis after
the away leg had finished goalless.
Inter will now play Juventus in the last four. Juve secured their place
after edging Perugia 1-0 in Turin to complete a 3-1 aggregate win.
Dutch midfielder Andy van der Meyde put Inter in front in the 16th minute
with a vicious free-kick from wide on the left, only for Dino Fava to
equalize for the visitors 10 minutes before half time with a stooping
header.
Inter restored their lead in the 51st minute with a brilliant solo goal
from Nigerian teenager Obafemi Martins, who opted out of the forthcoming
African Nations Cup to stay and fight for a first team place and will have
done his chances the power of good with an impressive display.
Argentine forward Julio Cruz made the tie safe by slotting home a penalty
11 minutes later after he had been brought down in the box by Valerio
Bertotto.
On Tuesday, debt-ridden Lazio held fellow financial strugglers Parma to
a 1-1 draw to ease into the last four. Dejan Stankovic gave Lazio a 71st
minute lead with a cool finish before Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano
leveled the scores for the home side with a vicious drive. The result gave
Lazio a 3-1 aggregate win having defeated Parma 2-0 in Rome last week.
Lazio will meet the winners of Thursday's tie between cup holders AC Milan
and Roma, a repeat of last season's final
Inter boosted their
attacking options and greatly reduced Parma's crippling debts by signing
21-year-old Brazilian striker Adriano from their cash-strapped Serie A
rivals.
Inter paid Parma approximately 23 million euros (29 million dollars) for
the remaining share of the player they bought in 2001 before they sold a
stake in him to Parma in one of Italy's many complicated co-ownership
deals.
Adriano, who has signed a contract which runs until June 2008, went on
loan to Parma for the start of the 2002/03 season after he had
enjoyed a brief spell in Inter's first team and a short stint at
Fiorentina.
As part of the deal, Inter reserve players Isah Eliakwu and midfielder
Ianis Zicu went to Parma on loan.
Adriano said it felt good to be back at San Siro. "I am happy to come back
home and hope I can help the club improve," he said. "It was thanks to
Inter I came to Italy and it's good to be back. I hope I play here for
many years. "I'm sure that by playing with Inter I will become a great
player. I cherish the Inter shirt and I want to work hard to win."
The powerfully built forward, whose full name is Adriano Leite Ribeiro,
has been in scintillating form this season, scoring nine league goals for
debt-ridden Parma , who have been forced to offload their star player to
ease their crippling debts.
Parma's future still remains uncertain following the collapse of parent
company Parmalat, who are at the centre of a multi-billion euro accounting
scandal.
But the money received from Inter for Adriano will be gratefully welcomed
by the club's directors as they try to balance the books and secure their
long-term future.
Adriano, who turns 22 on February 17, joined Inter from Brazilian club
Flamengo in the summer of 2001. He played for Inter in the 2001/02 season
and scored one goal in 14 appearances. Last season Adriano scored 15 goals in 28 league appearances for Parma.
Massimo Moratti has quit as president of Inter, bringing to an end a
big-spending but ultimately unsuccessful eight-year stint in charge of the
club.
Moratti, the son of late legendary Inter president
Angelo Moratti who led the club to glory in the 1960s, took over vowing to
bring back the glory days.
But in spite of a reign characterized by big spending
and the frequent sacking of coaches - including two world record deals to
sign Ronaldo (1997) and Christian Vieri (1999) - he only had the 1998 UEFA
Cup to show for his investment.
A statement on club website, www.inter.it, said: 'FC
Internazionale informs that president Massimo Moratti, Marco Tronchetti
Provera, Paolo Giulini, Angelo Mario Moratti and Angelo Moratti have this
evening announced their resignation from the club board.
'The president Massimo Moratti has recommended the name
of vice-president
Giacinto Facchetti to the board for the role of
president.'
Facchetti is one of the greatest players in Inter's
history and is a current vice-president of the San Siro club.
According
to reports coming out of Italy, Inter director Lele Oriali has flown to
London with the aim of negotiating the sale of Christian Vieri to Chelsea.
It is not yet known whether the Blues would be interested in signing the
player, but with Hernan Crespo out for the next six weeks, it could indeed
be a possibility.
Vieri has reportedly angered Inter after refusing to take part in last
night's Coppa Italia clash against Udinese.
Reports suggest that coach Alberto Zaccheroni wanted the player at his
disposal, but Vieri apparently refused, insisting that he stayed in Milan
for treatment on a knee injury.
Crown
of gold for Vieri’s One Hundred goal with Inter during the match Inter -
Lecce. "It is a beautiful goal for me but it is important and fundamental
that we continue to to give our maximum." The surprise was initiated by
Materazzi that had bought the crown two months before and waited
impatiently to surprise Bobo.
Inter, rebounding from
a humiliating Champions League rout, demolished Italian league leader
Juventus 3-1 Saturday to end Juve's 10-match unbeaten streak and rejoin
the title chase.
Argentine striker Julio Ricardo
Cruz, starting as replacement for the injured Christian Vieri, scored two
goals and Nigerian teenager Obafemi Martins added another for the Milan
team at Turin's Delle Alpi stadium.
The upset win lifted Inter to 22 points, four behind La
Juve, which suffered its first loss of the season and could be leapfrogged
by second-place AC Milan and AS Roma after Sunday's matches of the 11th
round.
In an Interview with TG5,
Alberto Zaccheroni has analyzed his Inter side
after Tuesday's 5-1 hammering at Arsenal.
"If these are things that are repeated then it's probably not just
chance," he said after it was put to him that he has failed to win either
game he has taken charge of in the Champions League. "We have to start
from the idea that when you build a team and try to grow, there might also
be some mistakes. The result (the 5-1 defeat to Arsenal) leads you to make
a wrong interpretation of the game. Up to then we had tried to do well. We
were divided and we no longer did things in the right way. One part of the
team concentrated on defending, while the others protested about the
penalty which wasn't given."
And did the defeat cancel out the good work done over the last month?
"It's like a child that's growing," he went on. "It falls down now and
again. Falls are part of the project. The crowd understood last night (Tuesay
night) that we're working towards an objective. They know we're trying and
that now and again things don't go how you want them to."
And on the disgruntled Christian Vieri: "He's training very well and
sometimes he has to be slowed down. At the moment he's not managing to do
things at best, but he always leaves his mark in every match."
Internazionale chief Massimo Moratti has admitted that he too was
puzzled by Christian Vieri's reaction, or lack thereof rather, to grabbing
what would have been the winner during the hard-earned 2-0 victory away to
Chievo on Sunday.
The Italian international striker has received some rough treatment from
the Nerazzurri's fed-up fans of late, so it was significant that he looked
more a frustrated man than a happy man after heading in the go-ahead goal
shortly after the hour-mark, while the rest of his team were clearly
overcome by the mixture of joy and relief.
"I am happy that Vieri got on the score sheet," commented Moratti. "I
don't understand his reaction, but the crucial point is that he scored."
"This win must not be the end of the matter," he added, "as consistency is
key in soccer. We must keep on winning."
Moratti Very Pleased With Zaccheroni's Performance
27/10/2003
Inter coach
Alberto Zaccheroni has revealed that president Massimo Moratti was very
pleased with his side's display in the 0-0 stalemate with AS Roma.
"By playing further up-field we risked little in defense and this is a
good sign," he was quoted as saying on the club's official site following
his first match in charge. "Have I heard from Moratti? Yes, the impression
is that he was very pleased with the team's performance. He saw a match
played well by the boys.
"The fact that we did well against Roma gives me hope. As far as the
technical aspect is concerned I'm satisfied with the team. I took a risk
because the players had different duties than what they are used to. We
ran the game for long stretches and to do that against Roma is a great
result.
"In these three days the team has followed me a lot and you could see that
in today's game. Kily Gonzalez? He was a great help, thanks to him
we defended in nine just like I asked. Materazzi told me that there was a
penalty foul on him as big as a house. Today's test gives me hope. I think
that in football, like in basketball, the team that recovers more balls
has more chances of winning.
"We suffered a bit in the first part of the second half - our mental and
physical energies had diminished. I can be pleased about this first match
played by the boys. Recoba ? We didn't manage to give him the best
service. We did well up to halfway inside their half then we were nervous
and the service for Vieri and Recoba was bad; we played too horizontal.
"Only the goal was missing. I think we exceeded the expectations today.
It's a shame about Vieri 's crossbar (in the last minute) - it would have
been the icing on the cake. We deserved the goal seeing as in stretches we
had our opponents on the rack.
"In the last part of the match we pinned Roma back. The Giallorossi were
dangerous in two occasions when we lost the ball.
"We're not looking at the distance in the table and we'll continue to work
in order to find a precise identity. To do well we need everybody, no one
excluded."
Inter have released a
statement on their official website after it was revealed that Mohamed
Kallon had failed a drugs test.
"Regarding the reports about Mohamed Kallon, FC Internazionale Milano
communicates that it will calmly await the completion of the drug tests,"
it read.
"Just like the other Nerazzurri, the Sierra Leone striker is routinely
tested under the supervision of Prof. Franco Lodi, forensic toxicologist
and director of the University of Milan Institute of Legal Medicine.
Kallon has always tested negative."
10/22/2003 A very determined Alberto Zaccheroni was unveiled as Inter's new boss this
morning, in Inter's Appiano Gentile training grounds.
"When you arrive at a new work place, it's always better to start with a
welcome. I would like you to talk about only things that will happen from
today on, I don't want questions on the attitude of the team and on the
choices made previously. I don't care about anything that happened until
yesterday," said Inter's new boss.
"I have already underlined the enthusiasm I have for this new adventure. I
am convinced Inter have a very competitive squad and the ambitions of the
club and Moratti are also mine. Now I have to transmit this enthusiasm to
the players. I don't forget we are already seven points behind the leading
pack, but the time to close the gap is there" he added, before offering
his vision on how he sees 'El Chino' Recoba's position on the pitch.
"Maybe the team only lacks a classic offensive midfielder, I don't think
Recoba is, he's a forward," said Zaccheroni.
10/19/2003 Italian news agency ANSA are reporting that Alberto Zaccheroni is the man
Inter have chosen to replace sacked coach Hector Cuper.
It appears that the former AC Milan trainer, who won the Scudetto with the
Rossoneri in the 1998/1999 season, signed a two year contract.
'Zac' will take over the team reigns on Wednesday.
Yesterday's comeback draw against Brescia was fatal for Inter coach Hector
Cuper, whose spell on the Nerazzurri's bench has come to an end.
Chairman Massimo Moratti decided to replace the Argentinean trainer with
former youth team coach Corrado Verdelli, at least for the upcoming
Champions League match against Lokomotiv Moscow, while the long-term
substitute will likely be Alberto Zaccheroni.
The club's statement published on the official website says: "FC
Internazionale Milano has decided to relieve coach Hector Cuper of his
duties. The club would like to thank the Argentine coach, his assistant
Oscar Armando Cavallero and athletic trainer Juan Manuel Alfano for their
work done. Corrado Verdelli will take charge of the first team for
Tuesday's Champions League match away to Lokomotiv Moscow".
Inter Can Finally Win Now-Ronaldo
It took less than 5 hours for former Inter hero Ronaldo to
express his feelings over the sack suffered by his 'enemy' Hector Cuper.
"I am happy for all Inter fans and my hope was that this coach left Inter
as soon as possible. With him, Inter could never win," Ronaldo told
Italian television show 'Quelli che il calcio…'.
"It is true I left Inter because of Cuper. I didn't get particularly along
with him and his mentality was too defensive," he added.
Also in various past interviews, the Real Madrid star had indicated the
Argentine coach as the main reason why he left Inter for Madrid at the end
of the 2001/2002 season.
Inter president Massimo Moratti says that Hector Cuper will stay in charge
of the side, despite the 3-1 derby defeat to Milan.
"Cuper remains the coach of Inter," he said. "Cuper is there and he'll try
to remedy the mistakes he made. It's one of the coaches' duties. Mistakes
can occur in a match, but from now on he can't make anymore."
09/27/2003 Inter and Udinese couldn't find a goal between them during a highly
controversial encounter at the Stadio Friuli, which saw both sides
unjustly reduced to ten men and Pizarro squander a second-half penalty.
Hector Cuper once again chopped and changed his side ahead of this one as
Almeyda got his first start of the season alongside Emre in the heart of
the visitor's midfield, while Cruz started up-front with Kallon in place
of the injured Vieri and rested Martins. Luciano and French debutante
Brechet got the nod in the coveted wing positions, which promise to be so
crucial to Inter's success this season.
It was Spaletti's side who dominated the first 45, however, though some
excellent last-ditch defending by Inter and some slightly askew attempts
at finishing meant that they didn't manage to test Toldo until the 60th
minute.
Even had there been more clear-cut opportunities the major talking points
still would have less to do with actual football than they did with human
nature.
Sophomore referee Dondarini had a heavy hand in triggering the storm by
sensationally sending Luciano off with just 15 minutes gone. The player
formerly known as Eriberto was guilty of an enthusiastic tackle on
Jankulovski, which merited no more than a yellow-card, however. The
Brazilian's incensed teammates risked compounding the setback by
threateningly surrounding the young referee en masse. Kallon and Javier
Zanetti, amongst others, were guilty of laying their hands on the man in
black, who would have been justified in sending one or more of the
Nerazzurri off.
Iaquinta had the best chance of the game on the half-hour mark but flashed
a header off a Jorgensen cross just wide, minutes after which the match
threatened to boil over once more.
The red-mist had obviously not lifted over Kallon, who kicked De Sanctis
in the ribs well after the keeper had got a hold of a loose ball in his
six-yard box. The infuriated Udinese players pushed Kallon into the back
of the net but thankfully no blows were exchanged despite the scrum that
developed. This time Dondarini's response to the situation was only to
punish the Sierra Leone striker with a yellow.
The Bianconeri fashioned a couple of good chances to go into the break
both a goal and a man up, but the lively Pizarro just missed the top
corner from the top of the box, while Kroldrup found himself on the end of
a corner but couldn't get proper purchase on the ball with the goal at his
mercy.
The controversy-riddled first-half ended with Adani coming in for
Materazzi, who limped off clutching his thigh.
Both coaches made changes at the half as Spaletti introduced Fava in place
of the over-excited Castroman, while Cuper sacrificed Emre for the more
defensive-minded Helveg. The former Milan man moved to right-back while J.
Zanetti moved into what was now a three-man Inter midfield.
Fava almost made an immediate impact but steered a good low shot just wide
of the post after finding himself on the end of a Bianconeri
counterattack, which stemmed from a shockingly sloppy give-away by Kallon.
Minutes after that, Toldo was finally forced into his first save on the
hour-mark when the influential Pinzi conjured up a good shot from
distance.
Pizarro had the best chance to win it on 63 minutes but fluffed his lines
from the penalty spot after Helveg had hauled down Fava. Nobody was
happier than the Dane, who had crazily decided that the best way to
prevent Fava from getting on the end of a cross was to tackle him rugby
style.
Martins was introduced in place of Cruz with just under 20 minutes left
and although the Nigerian speed-demon didn't do much with the ball his
boundless energy and intelligent runs helped bring upon Inter's best spell
of the match.
It was not long after Obafemi's introduction that Brechet forced the first
real save out of De Sanctis but football again took a back seat to raw
emotion when Cordoba and the freshly introduced Jancker got caught in a
second tangle in quick succession. This time the giant German theatrically
flopped to the ground after having been pushed in the chest by the
hot-blooded Colombian, and Jancker received a yellow card for his part in
the confrontation and his shameful exaggeration thereafter. Cordoba was
lucky to escape unpunished.
Once play resumed, the outstanding Javier Zanetti rattled the woodwork
with a scorcher from distance, which capped his umpteenth fantastic surge
out of midfield.
With just two minues left, Kroldrup was harshly sent-off for interrupting
yet another barn-storming run by Inter's skipper with a desperate lunge.
Tombolini's decision was a clear-cut make-up call as the Danish defender's
tackle was a carbon copy of Luciano's.
Fittingly, the referee ended the game with another controversial decision,
as he chose to blow for the final whistle just as Inter were setting up to
take a freekick from a highly promising position.
Inter coach Hector Cuper has conceded the Serie A title to Juventus after
a 1-1 draw with Lazio at the weekend left it eight points behind the
leader with four games to play.
"An eight point lead is simply too big, even if
mathematically speaking we've still got a tiny chance," Cuper told La
Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday.
"We mustn't think about winning the league anymore, but
holding on to second place."
A 77th-minute strike by Lazio's Simone Inzaghi cancelled
out an earlier effort by Hernan Crespo to ruin Inter's challenge for this
season's scudetto.
The result means Juve can wrap up its 27th championship
next weekend if it beats Lazio in Rome on Saturday and Inter draws against
Atalanta.
Inter, which led Serie A at the beginning of the season,
is left with a Champions League semifinal showdown against city rival AC
Milan as its final chance of claiming a trophy.
"That's our top priority now, but the important thing
right now is to rest players who've been playing all year," added Cuper.
"With the game against Atalanta on Saturday and then the
first leg of our Cup match against Milan (on May 7) we've got a tricky
week coming up."
Milan, Jan 17 Inter president
Massimo Moratti has said he is prepared to buy the San Siro stadium so
that the club can improve the playing surface.
"I'm ready to buy the San Siro. Only through ownership
of the stadium can we carry out works on the roof that will improve the
state of the pitch," he was quoted as saying in the Milan edition of
Corriere della Sera on Friday.
The state of the San Siro pitch has been a cause of
concern for some time and several Inter players have spoken out about the
lumpy surface.
In December striker Hernan Crespo complained that the
ball jumped about as though it had a rabbit in it whenever they played at
their home ground.
Crespo is currently out until April with a thigh injury
sustained when he slipped and fell at the San Siro during his side's 2-0
win over Modena last weekend.
Ownership of Italy's football stadiums is a
controversial issue. Most of the country's big stadiums are owned by city
councils, and shared by two teams, a situation that irks clubs such as
Inter, who are not allowed to develop commercial facilities inside the
grounds.
The Rome-based sports daily Corriere dello Sport is
currently campaigning to give AS Roma and Lazio the right to buy the
Stadio Olimpico. So far they have met with a frosty reception from the
city council.
Inter may have more luck. Milan's Sports Assessor, Aldo
Brandirali, told Corriere della Sera he was in favor of selling the
ground.
"I've been promoting the idea," he told the paper on
Thursday. "'We can make 100 million euros ($106.5 million) out of a sale."
Every derby in the Italian league is something special, but there are a
couple reasons why tonight's match between AC Milan and Inter is getting
even more hype than usual.
"It's been 10 years since the two Milan teams played
while both are in the fight for the title," said Milan's acting president,
Adriano Galliani. "And Milan is the only city in Europe that has two teams
in the Champions League," said Galliani.
Milan (22 points) and Inter (23) are only one point
apart in the standings, right behind league-leader and defending champion
Juventus (24), which hosts Bologna earlier Saturday. "We have the
possibility to jump over them, to give a strong signal for our season,"
said captain Paolo Maldini, who has played in his fair share of derbies
during a 17-year career with Milan. "This game is worth double for us."
Maldini will pair in defense with fellow veteran
Alessandro Costacurta, who will be filling in for the injured Alessandro
Nesta. "The absence of Nesta weighs heavily, I won't hide it," Maldini
said. "But Milan has demonstrated it has other valid solutions. We hope
Alessandro can return and play Tuesday against Real Madrid."
Milan hosts the defending Champions League winner at San
Siro next week. Inter plays its first match of the second round of the
European competition on Wednesday at Newcastle. "I would have
preferred that he could play," said Inter's Uruguayan striker Alvaro
Recoba of Nesta. "Alessandro is a great champion, but the 'rossoneri'
(red-blacks) also have Maldini and Costacurta."
Recoba is expected to pair in attack with Christian
Vieri, who scored Italy's only goal in a 1-1 draw with Turkey Wednesday.
Turkey's goal was scored by another Inter player, midfielder Emre
Belozoglu.
Milan's attack is expected to consist of Filippo Inzaghi
and Ukrainian Andrei Shevchenko, while Brazilian Rivaldo may be on the
bench.
Inter coach Hector Cuper may leave one of his South
American stars, Argentine striker Hernan Crespo, on the bench also. Crespo scored the second goal in Argentina's 2-0 win in a
friendly in Japan Wednesday. He was joined there by Inter teammates Javier
Zanetti and Matias Almeyda.
"I don't think the injuries or transfers will have an
influence," Maldini said. "Because the teams are more or less in the same
situation."
